Bhutan is the only country on Earth that measures its progress in happiness, not GDP — and that isn't a slogan. It's law.
In 1972, Bhutan's Fourth King declared that Gross National Happiness matters more than Gross National Product. That single idea now shapes everything from school curricula to hydropower policy — and it's woven into every AMJ itinerary, whether you notice it or not. We think of it in two halves: the physical, and the metaphysical.

Bhutan doesn't just reduce emissions. It absorbs more carbon than it produces.
Bhutan's constitution mandates that at least 60% of the country remain under forest cover forever — today it stands above 70%. That forest, combined with clean hydropower exports, means Bhutan's forests absorb roughly three times more carbon than the entire country emits. It's the world's only verified carbon-negative nation. When you walk through a Bhutanese forest on one of our treks, you are, quite literally, standing inside climate policy that works.

A government body exists solely to protect your wellbeing — and the land's.
The Gross National Happiness Commission (GNHC) screens every major policy and development project against four pillars: sustainable and equitable development, environmental conservation, preservation of culture, and good governance. Tourism itself is regulated under this framework — it's the philosophical root of Bhutan's "High Value, Low Impact" policy, the Sustainable Development Fee, and the guide requirement that shapes how AMJ builds every trip. GNH isn't a wellness buzzword here. It's the actual operating system of the country you're about to visit.
"Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product."
— His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, Fourth King of Bhutan, 1972You could book Bhutan through a hundred other names. Here's the honest difference.
Every foreign visitor to Bhutan books through a licensed local operator — there's no walk-in tourism here. So the real question isn't "AMJ or the whole internet." It's: do you want a Bhutanese team who actually holds the ground permits and knows the monks by name, or a layer of resellers between you and them?
One phone call from the ground, not three
No agent-of-an-agent-of-an-operator chain. You reach the people actually holding your permits and driving your route.
The paperwork disappears

Since 2010, one principle hasn't changed.
AMJ began with a single Land Cruiser and a handful of trekking permits. Since 2010 we've grown into a full-service agency covering both directions of travel — bringing the world into Bhutan, and taking Bhutanese travellers out into the world — while keeping the same idea we started with: an itinerary is only as good as the guide standing next to you.
Every AMJ guide is registered with the Department of Tourism's Guide Management System, trained in first aid and high-altitude protocols, and typically speaks two or more languages beyond Dzongkha and English. That's not marketing language — it's the actual staffing standard behind every trip on this site.
